Some years back, some friends of ours once wished that the 7-Eleven Convenience Store chain would open here in Cagayan de Oro. We remarked that there are already as many convenience store chains in this city as there are sari-sari stores (personally, it seems that convenience stores are taking over neighborhood stores) so what’s the big deal with 7-Eleven? The simple answer to us was, “You mean you haven’t tried their food yet?”

As of today, a new 7-Eleven Convenience Store is about to open soon at the Caltex Gasoline Station in Gusa, located in front of the entrance to the Sta. Cecilia Village Phase 1. This is the Caltex Station owned by the HE & Sons Corp. and the new 7-Eleven branch will occupy the space of the former Star Mart that used to be a popular drinking and hangout night spot. This is not to be confused with another Caltex Station also in Gusa but located at the entrance to the St. Francis Learning Center.

Like the other 1,400 7-Eleven branches nationwide, this branch, and all other 7-Elevens in Cagayan de Oro is owned and franchised by the Taiwan based President Chain Store Corporation (PCSC) and plans to open a total of 25 7-Eleven branches all over the city. As of press time, the single branch so far that opened last June 2015 is the branch at the Georgetown Cybermall in front of Liceo de Cagayan University, with two other branches now under construction and opening soon, one at the Limketkai Center Gateway and the other at the ground floor of the Granvia Residences at the Pueblo IT Park beside Concentrix. This now makes four 7-Eleven stores to operate in Cagayan de Oro.

7-Eleven is a popular international chain of convenience stores owned by the Japanese parent company, Seven-Eleven Japan Co. based in Tokyo. Its franchising headquarters is in Dallas, Texas, USA, as the 7-Eleven, Inc. The first stores that opened in the 1920’s and 30’s were called Totem Stores and featured genuine Alaskan totem poles in front of the stores. In 1946 the stores were renamed 7-Eleven in reflection of the times it would open, considered radical at time, from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. with no lunch break closing. From 1969 until 1990, several franchises started experimenting with 24-hour schedules. By 2000, all 7-Eleven stores became 24-hour convenience stores but retained the original name for the sake of name retention.

7-Eleven is best known for their signature products such as the breakfast take outs (Fruit-tastic, donuts, iced coffee), lunch meals and afternoon snacks (plumpy chicken, crunch-your-lunch, sandwiches, slurpees, big gulps), and evening to late evening delights (dinner meals, sandwiches, fudgy cakes, scream ice cream, pizza, mini-donuts). All are sold at affordable prices.

In the Philippines, the first store opened by PCSC was in Quezon City in 1984. By 2000, PCSC had taken over as the exclusive franchisor of 7-Eleven stores in the Philippines.
