Bird Flu Update: 35,000 ‘balut’ Intercepted At Zamboanga City Port

Following the confiscation of over 19,000 kilograms of chicken meat in Cagayan de Oro City, the Bureau of Animal Industry has intercepted 35,000 incubated duck eggs in a port in Zamboanga City.

In a report from Philippine Star, The authority suspected that those eggs were infected by bird flu virus – a viral disease caused by different strains of influenza viruses.

The agents discovered the duck eggs in wooden crates on board a ship and were about to dock in the Zamboanga port. The eggs were traced to have originated from Pampanga.

On August 11, the Department of Agriculture has detected the spread of bird flu virus in a poultry farm in Pampanga which has led to the slaughter of over 400,000 birds to control the viral outbreak.

Several reports have surfaced that some farmers in Pampanga are experiencing some bird flu symptoms although it has yet to be proven. Once affected, human beings will have symptoms like conjunctivitis, fever, muscle aches, nausea, abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting and severe respiratory illness.
