In an article from Sunstar.com, CdeO Councilor Ma. Lourdes Gaane and head of the committee on health and sanitation will spearhead a meeting on July 7, 2017 with the aim to address existing issues on local hospitals such as the lack of intensive care unit rooms and the practice of asking a down payment before a patient will be admitted.

Gaane cited that in certain cases, there exists the Republic Act 8344 also known as the Act on Prohibiting the Demand for Deposit or Advance Payment for the confinement of patients in hospitals and medical clinics.

Furthermore, she also added that another law provides a comprehensive approach to health development known as the National Health Insurance Act or RA 7875 which endeavors to make essential goods, health and other social services available to all the people at an affordable cost and to provide a free medical care to paupers.

However, Gaane said with the while these two national laws, some hospitals in Cagayan de Oro failed to abide by the law.

The medical issues were raised after former City Mayor Magtajas was said to have experienced the same treatment before his death last June 19, 2017 wherein he was allegedly transferred from one hospital to another due to the lack of available ICU’s in hospitals or the complexity of the downpayment practice.

Gaane now calls on to every hospital administrators in the city to resolve these issues.

She also seeks to craft a legislation that would improve the capability of the city in terms of intensive care among its people.
