Soon to Open: A Cagayan de Oro Food Park Using Innovations like Used Ship Container Vans

Food enthusiasts and those seeking a never-ending variety of affordable food places will soon get to experience a new and innovative food park for the first time in Cagayan de Oro. The soon to be constructed and opened CDO FOOD PARK will be located along the Biasong and Tinib Roads in Macasandig near the Paseo del Rio on the south side. It is targeted to become the city’s first and most innovative food park that will feature different affordable restaurants in order to give people a wider variety of choices in food styles and presentations. It will also be the first in the city to use recycled materials such as used ship container vans.

Using a model for its concept, the CDO Food Park will be patterned after the Timbre + food park in Singapore that uses used ship container vans and varied food trucks with over 35 restaurants and stalls.

It is being hoped that the CDO Food Park can also be kept super clean just like Timbre + that is known for its very clean interiors and surroundings. It has not been finalized if the food park will be enclosed under one roof such as the Singapore food place or will be open air based on other concepts submitted.

In its Facebook page, CDO Food Park is now inviting possible locators. Concepts and innovations are also being welcomed to be submitted, no matter how far out or crazy they may seem. For the food locators, potential applicants are asked to submit what their major food concept would be (American, Chinese, Filipino, snacks, ihaw-ihaw, etc.), their possible store design, their possible menu, price range, and a short story behind the brand name.

At least 3 proposals are to be submitted to be reviewed for approval. Deadline for all submissions is December 31, 2016. Concepts, ideas, innovations, and proposals can be submitted to cdofoodpark@gmail.com. Submissions are cautioned to err on the side of being modern, industrial, or with a rustic backyard feel.

All concepts will be finalized along with details of the project construction including materials, leasing, and rentals sometime in January 2017. Construction is tentatively set to start in February, with the food place opening targeted in the summer months probably in April or May.

Actually, this is not the first time for a food park concept in Cagayan de Oro. Back in the 1980’s and early 90’s a food park was set up in “Plaza Divisoria” in front of Xavier University where the present Jollibee building is now standing, before it was torn down to make way for a bank building.

Another “Food Plaza” was set up at the corner of Velez and Yacapin Streets where the bank building is now standing. However, most of the stalls sold more or less the same foods and dishes and only differed a little in prices and taste.
