Congress approves House Bills to create Mindanao railway, power corporations

The House of Representatives approved house bills that seeks to create the Mindanao Power Corporation and the Mindanao Railways Corporation. These House Bills seek to spur economic development in the region.

In a three separate sessions, House Bills 122 and 357, both of which seeks to create a Mindanao Power Corporations, were both approved by the Committees on Government Enterprises and Privatizations.

According to a report from Philippine Canadian Inquirer, House Bill 122, which was authored by Rep. Celso Lobregat, seeks the non-privatization of the Agus and Pulangi Hydropower Complexes, which will bring down power rates in Mindanao.

While House Bill 357 authored by Cagayan de Oro Rep. Maximo Rodriguez assured that the Mindanao Power Corporation will be the solution to the current Mindanao power crisis.

In a separate session, the House Committees on Government Enterprises and Privatization, and on Transportation approved five measures for creating the Mindanao Rails Corporation.

The 2000 kilometer railway project will connect Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Butuan, Surigao, Davao and General Santos.
