Diarrhea outbreak kills 2, downs 400 in Medina, Misamis Oriental

DIARRHEA OUTBREAK

In an article from Bombo Radyo Cagayan de Oro, at least 2 people died and 400 were affected by a diarrhea outbreak throughout the municipality of Medina in Misamis Oriental.

Misamis Oriental Vice Governor Joey Pelaez said that the water pipes of the Medina Rural Water Works Sanitation Cooperative (MERWASCO) have been contaminated with bacteria and has affected 400 residents through accidental consumption.

Governor Bambi Emano assigned Misamis Oriental Provincial Health Officer Dr. Jerie Calingasan to lead the investigation of the incident after it was confirmed that some of the patients passed away.

Water sampling from MERWASCO’s water pipes has been conducted and brought for laboratory tests to find out whether the diarrhea outbreak came from the main water supply or not.

On the other hand, the assigned Rural Health Unit Officer refused to give comments on the incident of hundreds of residents being hospitalized after drinking contaminated water when it should have been Medina Mayor Dan Chan who was agreed to do it.

The MERWASCO officials were also called to give out clear statements regarding the incident and to make sure that their water is safe for the people in the municipality.
