Milgrace Driz, Buhangin Police Station Commander stated through an interview with SunStar Davao – online newspaper, “As of this time (2 a.m. Saturday), initial report 14 (are) dead.”

The victims were rushed to the Southern Philippines Medical Center (SPMC), Limso Hospital, Davao Doctors Hospital, and Brokenshire Hospital.

Davao City Vice Mayor Paolo Duterte stated, “Let us pray for the victims of this unfortunate incident, especially for those who died. Let us pray for those who are being treated in different hospitals and pray for their quick recovery. There are at least 10 people who perished because of the incident and a number were reported wounded.”

He added, “Rest assured the authorities are on top of this incident. Right now, we cannot yet give a definite answer to as to who is behind this as we are also trying to determine what really exploded. It’s a sad day for Davao and for the Philippines.”

Witnesses said they heard an explosion but Manuel Gaerlan, Police Regional Office (PRO)-Davao Director said that they are still conducting investigations to what had caused the explosion. The blast was said to be caused by an LPG tank, although this still needed to be confirmed.

Gaerlan stated, “The PNP is assuring the public that the situation is being handled carefully. A thorough investigation is being conducted to determine the cause of the explosion and checkpoints/chokepoints were already established at all exit points in the city. We call on all the people to be vigilant at all times and report to the police any suspicious packages or persons. Please refrain from creating/passing misleading or unverified reports to avoid confusion and panic.”

President Rodrigo Duterte already met with the law enforcements and intel agencies in Davao City, according to Presidential Communications Office Secretary Martin Andanar.

Around 10:25 p.m., Presidential Executive Staff Bong Go and Vice Mayor Duterte arrived at the night market. Vice Mayor then ordered bars and establishments to close and urged the public to go home.

Saturday classes for Ateneo de Davao University were suspended as the university is located across the street from the night market. The university also instituted restricted access for security measures after the explosion.
