The Philippines has some of the brightest TV personalities known locally and internationally. To name a few: Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao who recently won against Jessie Vargas in the WBO Welterweight Championship; Miss Philippines Kylie Verzosa, who was crowned Miss International 2016; and other Filipinos who brought glory for the country.
The city of Cagayan de Oro also has its fair share of TV personalities known in the field of singing, acting, pageantry, arts, and among others. Here are our list of famous TV personalities who hail from Cagayan de Oro.
December 20, 2015 was a remarkable event among Filipinos, especially Kagay-anons, because Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, a Kagay-anon, broke the 42-year Miss Universe drought in the Philippines. Born in Stuttgart, Baden-Württemberg, Germany on September 24, 1989, she grew up at Golden Village in Barangay Carmen, Cagayan de Oro City with her family.
Pia attended kindergarten at Kong Hua School and primary school at Corpus Christi in Macasandig, Cagayan de Oro City.
Then she finished her secondary education with the ABS-CBN Distance Learning Center and studied culinary arts at the Center for Asian Culinary Studies in Metro Manila, Philippines.
Sunot Sisters of Aegis
Juliet Sunot, Mercy Sunot, and later joined by Ken Sunot, are the lead vocalists of the famous Pinoy rock band Aegis, who was formed way back in 1990s. The Sunot sisters came from Cagayan de Oro, while one of their band members, Stella, came from Misamis Oriental.
Their career started in lounges and clubs in Japan and they were called as the AG’s Sound Tripper by AG Talent Development and Management. They were given the biggest break when they submitted a recorded demo of their hits “Luha” and “Halik”. After being presented to Alpha Records, the band was then named Aegis.
Studied Bachelor of Science in Developmental Communication in Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro, TJ Monterde is now chasing his singing career in Manila who is already making name in the music industry.
His first record “Ikaw at Ako” was released by Galaxy Records which became a hit in radio stations and music channels nationwide.
Maria Isabel Lopez
Maria Isabel “Maribel” Pagunsan Lopez, Binibining Pilipinas Universe 1982 titleholder from Cagayan de Oro, who represented the country in the Miss Universe 1982 held in Lima, Peru. She then became a Filipino movie and television actress.
She is a graduate of Fine Arts in the University of the Philippines Diliman and a member of the National Commission for Culture and Arts (NCCA). For the year 2011-2013, she was the Secretary of the Committee on Visual Arts.
Hails from Cagayan de Oro, Elizabeth Garcia Berroya won Binibining Pilipinas Universe in 1992.
She studied at De La Salle University. After her reign, she then worked as a newscaster in ANC Channel 21.
Born on August 10, 1983 in Cagayan de Oro, Filipino singer, actor and commercial model Mark Bautista received his career break when he became one of the grand finalists in the Philippine reality TV talent search “Star for a Night”, placing second behind Sarah Geronimo.
Before he became known nationally, he had a band called Voizemale which did various gigs in Cagayan de Oro which they mostly cover popular hits of Backstreet Boys and Earth, Wind & Fire.
Filipino actress, model, and a general practitioner Maricar Concepcion Pozon Reyes, simply known as Maricar Reyes, was born on June 20, 1984 in Cagayan de Oro City. She finished Bachelor of Science in Biology at Ateneo de Manila University who then pursued medicine at the University of Santo Tomas where she studied Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. It was in 2008 when she passed the board examination.
Before she became an actress, she was already visible in TV and print advertisements here in the Philippines and abroad. Playing the younger version of the character played by actress Gloria Sevilla in ABS-CBN’s Komik Presents: Kapitan Boom was her biggest break. Then followed by her appearances at several TV series.
It was in 2011 when she won Best Actress in Cinema One Originals Film Festival Awards for the Indie Film, Anatomiya ng Korupsiyon.
Born on December 13, 1965 in Cagayan de Oro was Raul Deodato Arellano. He is an artist, a sculptor, singer/songwriter, and stage/movie/television actor.
It was in 1987 when he became a scholar of Actors Workshop Foundation in the Philippines. Then in 1995, he took Film Making at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He majored in Painting and Art History at El Camino College, Torrance, California in 2002.
As an actor, he appeared and became known for Manila Skies (2009), Melancholia (2008) and West Side Avenue (2001). For Manila Skies, he was awarded Best Performance by the Youth Critics Circle, Inc.
Tagged as “Ms Wacky Go Lucky ng Cagayan de Oro”, 19-year old Marydale “MayMay” Entrata is part of Pinoy Big Brother Season 7 Lucky Teen Edition.
MayMay was chosen by the celebrity housemates out of the many teen auditionees. Recognized of having a cheerful personality similar with past PBB housemates Melai Cantiveros and twins Joj & Jai, however, MayMay disclosed that she had regrets of not getting the chance to know her father who left her family at an early age. Entrata joined the competition to help her mother who is an OFW in Japan.
Entrata is a college student from Mindanao University of Science and Technology.
