It doesn’t have to be a romantic movie, but in reality, whatever’s available will have to do. Good thing there are five good movies coming around soon, so read on and set up that movie date.

The Space Between Us

Filipinos aren’t strangers to long-distance relationships (think OFW’s), and we’ve also had our fill or more than a hundred sci-fi films about landing on Mars. Well, this film kind of combines the two. Gardner Elliot (Asa Butterfield… wait, you don’t know who he is? Try watching Ender’s Game, Hugo, and Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children) is a teenager born and raised on Mars and chats online with Tulsa, a girl from Colorado. She doesn’t know his real story because NASA has kept his existence a secret.

When Gardner comes to earth to meet Tulsa, well, you’ll finally see this film has more holes than your average Pinoy telenovela. But it does have a major potential for soul spilling, romance, and teenage angst if you’re up to senior high school age. However, if you’re older than that and even just half a genius, you’ll easily spot the twisted ending even before the movie reaches the middle. Gary Oldman’s acting as a visionary Elon Musk-sort-of-character is top quality as usual. Director Peter Chelsom actually does a nice job at viewing the beautiful earth through Gardner’s eyes, but that’s about it. If this film were a rocket, it could still launch, but it would never soar. But since it’s Valentine’s, just watch it for its cuteness.

Why Him?

During the Christmas holidays (yup, this film is a bit late), Ned (Bryan Cranston), an overprotective but loving and responsible father and his family visits his daughter at Stanford University. There, they meet her well-meaning but socially-awkward billionaire Silicon Valley boyfriend, Laird (James Franco). The conflict begins when Ned learns that Laird is to “pop the question” soon to his daughter, and thinks that he is an inappropriate for her, but doesn’t know how to fight against all the “high techiness” around him.

Rings 2017

We’re pretty sure you already know this film, because who doesn’t know about the evil Samara and how she exits a television set in that weird , crawling fashion, with her jet black hair covering her disfigured face and evil eyes. But truthfully, in this age of trending reboots, be aware that this is the FOURTH reboot of the original Japanese horror film, Ring, back in 1998, that was later followed by another Japanese Ring 2, and then got a Hollywood reboot as The Ring in 2002. The Hollywood reboot was excellent due to director Gore Verbinski and in the acting of Naomi Watts and Martin Henderson.

What made The Ring a success was simply because people didn’t know it was a reboot of a Japanese film. So the new Rings as a reboot takes place 10 years after The Ring, with “if you watch this VHS tape, it has a curse, and you will die after seven days,” and here comes Samara again. If you and your special someone are into horror movies, this would be a good choice for you both!

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter

Alice (Jovovich) discovers a group of rebels and they’re finally going to take on the leader of the evil corporation that unleashed the zombie virus.

Picking up immediately after the events in Resident Evil: Retribution, Alice (Milla Jovovich) is the only survivor of what was meant to be humanity’s final stand against the undead. Now, she must return to where the nightmare began – The Hive in Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.
