4 Injured as Grenade Explodes at a Public Plaza in Iligan City

There were at least four individuals injured in an explosion at the public plaza in Barangay Poblacion in Iligan City around 6:45 in the evening of December 7, 2016, Wednesday. The said explosion was just beside the Iligan Police Station.

The injured victims were identified as follows:

  • Cheryl Paguit Matugas, 26, a vendor and a resident of Caugmaran, Barangay Suarez, Iligan City
  • Laureto Carabantes Alla Jr.,  26, from Purok 5, Santiago, Iligan City
  • Christine Mercaderos Perocho, 20, a student of MSU-IIT and a resident of Sitio Curvada, Barangay Maria Cristina, Iligan City
  • Sheilamae Asibal Maagad, 23, from Actub St., Poblacion, Iligan City

Grenade fragments were recovered from the blast site.

The police said that the grenade may have been thrown at the site by a passing vehicle. However, a witness said that a man who was wearing a jacket and a hat threw the grenade at the direction where three people were at, on the sidewalk.

The authorities are yet to find out the motive behind the explosion considering that it may be related to the illegal drug trade,  personal matters, or an act of terrorism following the ongoing offensive against the Maute group in Butig, Lanao del Sur.
