Last week, Department of Tourism Region 10 Director Catalino E Chan III announced that the CAAP (Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines) is set to authorize flights in Laguindingan Airport Misamis Oriental to and from Seoul and Busan, South Korea by the last quarter of the year.

An obvious reason for this is the huge population of Korean nationals in Cagayan de Oro and of the entire Northern Mindanao region for education, leisure and business. Through this, Korean presence will get a boost which is currently dominating tourist arrivals in Northern Mindanao, second to US nationals.

Now, Laguindingan Airport is the main gateway to Northern Mindanao replacing Lumbia Airport in Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro which is currently operating as a military airbase for the Philippine Air Force.

A total of 462,825 incoming passengers from 6,200 flights passed through Laguindingan Airport as recorded in 2014.

This will signal Laguindingan Airport from being a “Principal Domestic Airport Class I” classification into what it was originally designed, which is for international flights. An opportunity for the tourism and economy of the city of Cagayan de Oro and of the neighboring cities in the region. As soon as this international flight becomes operational, travel enthusiasts won’t be needing to transfer to international carriers from Manila and Cebu.
