P60 billion is needed to complete the connectivity project in Mindanao, the completion of this project envisioned to encourage swift development in the island.

According to a report from Manila Bulletin, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) already has P17 billion for infrastructure programs in priority areas in Mindanao, said  Secretary Datu Hj. Abul Khayr D. Alonto, chairman of the Mindanao Development Authority.

The connection of some 1,500 kilometers will be needing about P43 billion, Alonto added.

He added that part of the connectivity program in Mindanao will be the Mindanao High- Speed Railway System (MRS), it is recognized as one of the major projects to be built on the island.

This Mindanao railway system is part of the economic revolution that the government has envisioned for Mindanao, Alonto said.

They initially eyed the China Railway Company which built the railway system from Shanghai to Beijing, he said, but he added that the project is open for other investors as it will undergo bidding.

The project could generate around 100,000 jobs, based on the China proposal. 80 percent will be Filipinos and 20 percent will be handled by Chinese.

Alonto said that when everything will be linked, they are optimistic that in the ASEAN, “Mindanao is the future.”
