An official from the 4th Infantry Division disclosed that around 50 communist rebels conducted a road blocking that lasted for only 30 minutes. A checkpoint was established along the Butuan-Cagayan de Oro national highway in Medina, Misamis Oriental on February 21, Tuesday morning.

According to a report from Mindanews, the rebels stopped all vehicles to look for soldiers and policemen but captured no soldiers nor policemen, said Capt. Peter Sarsagat, acting public affairs officer of the 4th Infantry Division.

The checkpoint was set up along the highway in Purok 4, Barangay Pahindong, Medina manned by two platoons of the “Sandatahang Pangpropaganda” of the New People’s Army Guerilla Front 4B, he added.

Saragat said that the rebels “wanted to show their forces.”

The rebels then left en route to the direction of Barangay Macopa, which is also in Medina town.

Meanwhile, Misamis Oriental Governor Yevgeny Emano expressed his concerns concerning this incident saying that it would affect the province’s tourism industry. He said, “So long as there is a shooting war, no tourists will come to the province.”
