People looking for a little pre-Valentine’s romp were not disappointed when they happened by at the Ayala Centrio Mall at around 6:00 p.m. last February 13 in the Activity Center. BoyBandPh was there performing live and entertained mall goers.

They are now managed under Star Magic with a recording contract with Star Music and online music hub One Music PH. The group is composed of Niel Murillo (18 years old), Tristan Ramirez (24 years old), Ford Valencia (22 years old), Joao Constancia (21 years old), and Russell Reyes (19 years old).

Pinoy Boy Band Superstar was a talent-reality search for the ultimate Pinoy boy band launched September of last year with Billy Crawford as host. The show welcomed aspiring singing heartthrobs as young as 14 years old and above who could show charm, singing talent, and great personality that will go a long way for a Filipino boy band.

The show’s judges were Vice Ganda from the popular noontime show It’s Showtime, international and South Korean K-Pop sensation Sandara Park, pop-rock singer Yeng Constantino and original movie and television heartthrob Aga Muhlach.

Before facing the superstar judges, the contestants had to woo and impress the female fans with their charisma, personality and talent. Once they got a score of 75 percent and above, they moved to the next round and would perform for the judges.

Aside from the automatic management and record contract, each winner also received P1 million in cash prize and each got a motorcycle from Yamaha. Niel Murillo was the first declared winner, having earned the highest combined scores from the judges and number of text votes, with the other four being declared the next day after a battle of the final 7 wherein two were dropped, these being Mark Oblea and Tony Labrusca. All in all, the five had to battle their way up against 35 other contestants from September to November.

Get to Know the Boy Band PH Members

Reminiscent of the usual choices of ABS-CBN winners in competitions, Niel Murillo’s true sob story is that if he wins the contest he would use his winnings to help his visually impaired brother.

Russell Reyes is a pure American born in Illinois, U.S.A from Filipino parents. Reyes cannot speak any Filipino dialect. Again, this is reminiscent of ABS-CBN’s style of selecting so-called Filipino-Americans (even if not born in the Philippines) in order to feed into the colonial mentality of its mass viewers.

Ford Valencia won on pure merit because his singing voice and expressions were like those of a professional singer.

Being the oldest winner, Tristan Ramirez is another sob story coming from a poor family and is hoping that a big break will get him to help his family out of poverty. He was considered the dark horse of the competition but still won over Mark and Tony.

Joao Constancia is Portuguese, having been born in Macau, and whose mother is Filipino. He was considered the so-called “eye candy” that would draw in the female fans to like the group, even if his voice sounded somewhat “ordinary” but would still be “trainable” for the future.

Murillo hails from Cebu, Valencia comes from Valenzuela City in Manila, and Ramirez is from Bulacan. They have already been associated in past shows with acts from Sandara Park, Vice Ganda, Ogie Alcacid, and Yeng Constantino. At the start of the year the boy band released their first self-titled album under the recording label of Star Music. The album features their first hit single in 2016, “We Made It” as well as their more recent hit, “Unli Pag-ibig,” the latter being performed only after New Year’s Day on “Umagang Kay Ganda on ABS-CBN.
