Protected Thresher Sharks Killed in Misamis Oriental

Mga higala! Protected thresher sharks were found ruthlessly killed in separate coastal locations of Gingoog City and Manticao, Misamis Oriental this weekend.

Two of the thresher sharks were killed in the waters of Gingoog City and one of them is visibly wounded, see pictures below:

The other thresher shark was then discovered in Purok 14, Manticao:

BTW, all three thresher shark species have been listed as vulnerable to extinction by the World Conservation Union since 2007 because they are highly vulnerable to overfishing. Besides being hunted for their meat, threshers are also hunted for their liver oil, skin (for leather), and their fins, for use in shark-fin soup. Furthermore, they do not appear to be a threat to humans and are even afraid of divers.
