More than 3,000 supporters last Saturday in Iligan City protested the release of jailed City Mayor Celso Regencia after the mayor was detained for masterminding the assassination attempt on former Rep. Vicente Belmonte two years ago.

According to a report by Inquirer.net, Regencia has been detained for more than a year after he was charge of initiating the plot to kill Belmonte at Laguindingan Airport in 2014.

Congressman Belmonte survived the attack but three of his men were killed. His supporters insisted that Regencia is not involved in the assassination.

Vice Mayor Vera Cruz lamented on his frustrations at the rule of law saying that there is no action on Regencia’s case and that the people of Iligan are suffering. Vera Cruz added that Regencia should be released to perform his duties and function as a Mayor.
