The Regional Civil Security Unit (RCSU) of Region 10 ordered the pulling out of illegally deployed K-9 units in several business establishments and malls in the CdeO and in Northern Mindanao last Tuesday, May 30.

According to RCSU Commander, Superintendent Rowen Rey Pornobe, several K-9 units illegally deployed in security risk areas in the city would bring more danger to businesses than providing peace and order in their areas.

The order was released due to reports received by RCSU that several malls in CdeO and other parts of Northern Mindanao have been illegally hiring K-9 units to bolster their security system.

However, Pornobe made it clear to the owners of malls and shopping centers throughout the region that they have to make sure that their accreditation papers on the deployment of K-9 services allow them to do so and have been duly licensed by the PNP’s Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agency (SOSIA) in Manila.

He said that a certified dog handler does not necessarily follow that the dog he is handling is fit to do the duties of a K-9 unit identified by SOSIA. At that, certified K-9 units must have unique serial numbers carved in an embedded chip that is injected into their bodies to be scanned electronically.

RCSU will now be inspecting malls and shopping areas throughout Northern Mindanao to find out whether some K-9 units are duly SOSIA-accredited or not. Consequently, those that will not pass the inspection will be advised to be pulled out of the particular mall’s security department.

It also follows that unaccredited K-9 units owned and deployed by accredited K-9 providers will also be pulled out.
