In a reaction to Senator-elect Panfilo Lacson ‘s proposal to grant incoming president Rodrigo Duterte emergency powers placing Mindanao under Martial Law to wipe out the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), reelectionist Senator Vicente Sotto III said, ”I have no objections. I will agree.”

The proposal of getting rid of the ASG was due to their kidnap-for-ransom activities in Southern Philippines, and the recent killing of the second Canadian national Robert Hall.

Sotto believes that Dutete will be able to offset the ASG.

“This is only my personal opinion. Ang Philippine Army o ang Armed Forces of the Philippines naghihintay lang ‘yan ng pagkakataon,” Sotto said. “Believe me. Naghihintay ng pagkakataon na bigyan ng go signal ng Chief Executive. Dalawang magagaling na sundalo ang nakausap ko dyan. Ang mga pangalan Honasan at Lacson.”

Meanwhile, Senator Juan Edgardo “Sonny” Angara was asked to express his statement regarding the same issue and he said, “Kailangan na talaga ng mabangis na reaksyon dito. Dapat mabigyan ng reward para ma-capture para ma-mobilize ang komunidad laban sa kanila.”

However, mentioning the traffic problem in the National Capital region (NCR), Sotto doubted that Duterte needs emergency powers to solve it saying, “To solve the traffic, I don’t think it’s necessary. P’wede namang hindi emergency powers doon. Ang pag-uusapan mo lang dito is Metro Manila and Metro Cebu. Iyun ang pinakamatindi ang traffic sa buong Pilipinas, ‘yun dalawang ‘yon.”

“Bakit kailangan ng emergency powers samantalang may mga proposal naman na p’wedeng gawin. It’s a matter of implementing it. I will be delighted if the President will appoint a MMDA chairman that is fast-buckling and tough. Iyung no parking sa (busy streets sa) buong Metro Manila, that is a good idea to solve the traffic problems,” Sotto finally added.
