Kagay-anon chess players David Rey Ancheta from Corpus Christi School and Rhea Canino representing Barangay Kauswagan beat all other of their contenders in the recently concluded 2017 Shell National Youth Active Chess Championships Grand Finals at the SM Mall of Asia last October 8, 2017.
In an article from Sunstar Cagayan de Oro, Ancheta swept two medallists of the Palarong Pambansa with two draws and no loss, ultimately allowing him to land on the victor’s spot for the 14-under title.
Corpus Christi School Sports Coordinator-Elementary Level, Pearl Obenza, said the feat of Ancheta in the 9-round Swiss system chess event will serve to inspire fellow athletes in their school.
Corpus Christi previously won in the 2007 Shell Active’s kiddies with Palaro gold medalist Lennon Hart Salgados representing the school.
On the other hand, Barangay Kauswagan’s Rhea Canino became the top performer of the women’s 14-under category after she scored 4 points besting other of her opponents.
