21 Jul 1 CAFGU killed, 5 PSG wounded, and 1 police asset hostaged in NPA ambush
A member of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Units (CAFGU) was killed and 5 other personnel of the Presidential Security Guard (PSG) were wounded in an ambush carried out by suspected members of the New People’s Army last Wednesday, July 19.
In an article from Manila Bulletin News Website, the victimized peace and order personnel and other members of the convoy were travelling from Davao City to Cagayan de Oro City when they were halted by about a hundred men clad in military uniform who were suspected to be rebels at a supposed checkpoint in Barangay Katipunan, Arakan, North Cotabato.
It turned out afterward that the checkpoint was only a set up by the disguised bandits who later started firing gun bullets towards the convoy.
Eastern Mindanao Command (EMC) spokesperson Maj. Ezra Balagtey said that the checkpoint was indeed illegitimate since the Task Force Davao, whose uniforms were worn by the bandits, did not have any operation around the area of the incident at that time.
During the firefight, the rebels were able to escape and headed towards Brgy. Gambudes in Arakan bringing along police asset, Rogelio Mago Cenon, taken as hostage.
However, Balagtey believed that there is an undetermined number of injured from the side of the men who conducted the ambush when the government’s side fought back.
