26 Apr 13-Year Old Peanut Roll Vendor Graduated as Class Valedictorian
John Ericson Roselim, a 13-year old boy in Sta. Ines Elementary School, Brgy. Sta. Ines, Talisayan Town, Misamis Oriental, graduated as class valedictorian despite being just a peanut roll vendor to help his family by his meager income.
Before he transferred to Sta. Ines, John Ericson went to Macabalan Elementary School in Cagayan de Oro City until grade 1 and finished as first Honorable Mention, also a Science Club member there.
John Ericson whose dream is to become a lawyer and a businessman is a Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) beneficiary. He is the second among the eight children of Mr. and Mrs. Crisman and Genarlie Roselim.
Airin Jean M. Ariaso, the municipal link of Talisayan, Misamis Oriental had the opportunity of mingling with John Ericson and his family in Talisayan. She said that “He encourages others to fight for their desires and what they believe in, and doing it through God because he believes that nothing great comes easy and with God everything is possible.”
He is a very motivated pupil who strives to be great. His skills are not limited only to his academic excellence. John Ericson also loves to play basketball, biking, and gardening. He is also very welcome to the idea of becoming a working student if his parents aren’t capable of sending him to college.
John Ericson is also active in Co-Curricular activities. He is a member of Youth for Christ (YFC) and Kids for Christ when he was a little younger.
With his young age, he had managed to be acquainted with diplomatic responsibilities. He was elected as classroom president, Supreme Pupil Government president, and Federated Supreme Pupil Government auditor at the Department of Education’s District of Talisayan.
Aside from these high positions that he managed to lead, he is also active in inter-school activities to represent his school; Quiz Bee, Read-a-Thon, MTAP, were some of that, to name a few.
John Ericson’s success in these early years of his life is made possible because of his parents who have molded him to become a responsible kid. “Proper discipline and assigning household chores to each member of the family were being practiced for them to have a sense of responsibility,” Ariaso said.
With only his father acting as the only provider of the family, John Ericson learned to help his family, assisting his mother to handle responsibilities at home. It became a habit for him, more than a necessity.
With all of these experiences under his belt, John Ericson is a potential that has to be observed and an inspiration for those who are struggling in their schooling. Indeed, poverty can’t cripple a determined heart and resolute mind to pursue excellence.
