02 Feb 15th Strike Wing of the Philippine Air Force Transferred to Lumbia Airport
In a report from ABS-CBN News, a ground-breaking ceremony for the relocation of the 15th Strike Wing at the Lumbia Airport in Barangay Lumbia, Cagayan de Oro led by Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana and officials of the Philippine Air Force and Philippine Army was held last February 1, 2017, Wednesday. The relocation was said to be a move in decongesting the Ninoy Aquino International Airport which is in Manila.
The former base of the 15th Strike Wing, which is the Sangley Point in Cavite, will be transformed into a landing site for commercial flights.
According to Lorenzana, the transfer of the air base to Cagayan de Oro will be more convenient for the troops as the 15th Strike Wing is usually posted in Mindanao. It is being estimated that the 15th Strike Wing will be fully operational by the year 2019 with some 20 attack aircraft based here in the city.
