3 Killed in a Shootout at Cogon, CDO; “Rido” Seen as a Possible Motive

Afternoon of February 19, 2017, Sunday, a shootout made a ruckus in the streets of Daumar and Yacapin in Cogon, Cagayan de Oro killing a store cashier identified as Mawi Sulayman, 28, and two gunmen who are yet to be identified, leaving bystander Erlinda Ocno with a gunshot wound from a stray bullet. Such shootout is being thought to be a “rido” or clan war case.

In a report from Inquirer, the shootout happened in front of Jabar Ukay-Ukay after three motorcycle-riding men started shooting with Sulayman, a resident of Barangay Bonbon, as the target who then suffered gunshots on different parts of his body which led to his instant death. A friend of Sulayman then retaliated against the assailants killing two of them while the other escaped.

Erlinda Ocno, 56, and a resident of Barangay Carmen who was just a bystander during the shootout was hit a stray bullet.

The police were able to recover a .45 pistol, a loaded magazine of .45 pistol, cellphone, and the gunmen’s motorcycle from the crime scene.
