03 Jul 3 Local Kagay-anon Brands That Inspires You To Be Plastic Free in Cagayan de Oro City
In case you didn’t know it yet, its Plastic-Free July!!! But what does it take to be plastic free in Cagayan de Oro City ?
We (ACADEO) were fortunate enough to meet and learn more about these brands/initiative that aims to help us help the environment and show our love for the city. And were more than happy to share it to you, our beloved audience.
Sáku – Handmade & Upcycled
Sáku Handmade And Upcycled promotes upcycling, or the creative reuse of waste or unused materials, more specifically flour sacks (saku sa harina).
With our short talk with the man behind the brand (Yuri), we learned that aside from the opportunity of helping the environment become plastic-free, thru Sáku, they were also able to create employment and give housewives of a certain community, have a means of living and a helping hand with the environment.
Sáku Handmade And Upcycled makes bags, pouches, and are currently conceptualizing on new products that can replace our use for plastic in our day to day lives, and pushing further the dream of being plastic free in Cagayan de Oro City.

Lunhaw PH
Lunhaw PH aims to raise awareness on single use plastic and provide an affordable eco-friendly alternative to help make it easier for people to switch from the daily use of plastic to its alternatives. Lunhaw by the way, means green.
“Refuse to Use” (referring to the use of plastic) as what they say, and their line of products touches our everyday lives in a more basic manner.
They sell wooden toothbrushes and steel/wooden straws, that we can use to replace one of the most common plastic wastes we contribute on a daily basis.
With a little chat with one of the owners (Bea), I felt excited to know that there will be more products with the same aim in the future, and we’ll be seeing more alternatives towards making it plastic free in Cagayan de Oro City.
Maybe one day there’ll be more establishments that allow BYOG/BYOC (bring your own Cup/Glass) to minimize the use of plastic utensils.
A good inspiration would be Madge Cafe in Ilo-Ilo, where regular customers already have their own cup (non plastic) in the store for the next time they drink coffee in the place again.
And of course, there’s no better way end the day with a good brush using their wooden toothbrush, and feeling a little more fresh and lighter, knowing that you were able to refuse to use.

- Daily Brushing
- Travel Dining
The Stoneware Pottery, Inc.
And talking about coffee, nothing gives you a greater coffee drinking experience than fine stone made coffee cup. Specially one from The Stoneware Pottery, Inc. , one of the better known experts in stoneware products made from the finest clay soil. And what makes this even better is the fact that it is home-grown (Zone 8 Bulua).
They have a wide range of products from pots to cups, plates and dinnerware, and a whole lot more. This gives you more and more alternatives than using plastic dinnerware and furniture. And with their artistic designs and durable quality, you don’t really have to worry about it lasting.
Plastic may not break, but there’s no touch of heart in the make. And you can ask any coffee lover out there, and they will really say Coffee/Tea is better in a real cup.
Maybe one day we’ll see more and more people preferring to bring their own cups and glasses in their preferred coffee shops till it becomes a trend. A trend that will push being plastic free in Cagayan de Oro City.
