31 Aug Catholic Bishops Against CDO School’s “Love Ban”

“We are not in favor of this policy,” said chairman of the CBCP’s Episcopal Commission on Catechesis and Catholic Education, Bishop Roberto Mallari, on August 30, 2016, Tuesday regarding the school policy of the Golden Heritage Polytechnic College.
The said CDO school’s policy prohibits students from having a love affair with fellow students as what the line “love affair will surely destroy the life of a young lady student” suggests that can be read in a streamer that was displayed at the school. It is for the school’s main goal which is for its students to avoid unwanted pregnancy as said by the school’s management. It added that they consulted the parents and that they have agreed to the “love ban” policy.
Mallari suggested a program for “values formation and responsible relationships” instead of the “love ban”, of which the CBCP implements. Meanwhile, the Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAO) said that schools can better prepare students for intimate relationships.
“This is a critical context, wherein we build friendships and relationships that cut across time. These are important series of moments when we nurture loving and life-giving relationships,” CEAP Advocacy and Information Management Officer Anthony Coloma said. “We should not deny these opportunities to them.”
Coloma added that the love ban may adversely affect the ability of the students to build “lifelong and intimate relationships” as adults.
