The Cagayan de Oro City government conducted a groundbreaking ceremony for a P2.4-million dog impounding facility at Barangay Balubal on February 7, Tuesday.

According to a report from Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the Animal Shelter-Dog Impounding facility which has a clinic and surgical room will be established to extend and guarantee the efficiency of the City Veterinary Office’s (CVO) project on preventing rabies-related cases.

The groundbreaking and capsule-laying were carried out by City Mayor Oscar Moreno together with City Veterinarian Dr. Perla Asis, Maria Teresa Roa of the Department of Agriculture Region 10 and barangay officials.

With this project being implemented in the city, Mayor Moreno believed that CVO will be able to expand their program in achieving a ‘rabies free’ city. It has been reported that CDO ranks number one on rabies-related cases on 2013.

Dr. Asis said that CDO is the second local government unit in Mindanao to have developed an impounding facility and that she is thankful to have this kind of facility where stray dogs are to be taken care of.
