The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premiere recently conducted I.D.E.A. 2015, this being an acronym for Invitational for Debate, Essay, and Art. The event was held last September 11 and 12 at the Liceo de Cagayan University campus. The event featured different secondary schools from all over Northern Mindanao participating in the competitions for debate, essay writing, acrylic painting, and editorial cartooning.
I.D.E.A. – “Peace in Mindanao”

The invitational event’s theme is “Peace in Mindanao” and the central component of the theme and event centers on the creation of the Bangsamoro Basic Law and the eventual formation of the Bangsamoro Region in Mindanao. The focus of I.D.E.A. 2015 tackles one of Rotary International’s area of focus, this being “The promotion of peace and conflict resolution.”
The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premiere being the brainchild for this brilliant IDEA decided to have this event using debate, acrylic painting, editorial cartooning, and essay writing in order for students to tackle and better understand this ongoing peace process in Mindanao. Likewise, the event is also one small way to broaden other people’s awareness of the issue.

It also gives a chance for the youth to come out with their perspectives of the BBL as well as platforms for them to voice their points of view and opinions. I.D.E.A. 2015 therefore is not just an academic competition, but also a means for further public information and awareness on an issue that affects every Cagayanon and Mindanaoans in general.
The “Premiere” Behind I.D.E.A.
Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premier
The Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premiere is the youngest Rotary Club in the city to date, having been chartered only in April 2015. It is now one of the 45 clubs that compose Rotary International District 3870 in the Philippines. The young club is composed of 30 young professionals, some whose parents are also Rotarians. This first major event and successful venture is a harbinger for great things to come and be achieved by this young club and its young members.

Idea Essay Writing Contest
The first day of the competitions featured the preliminary rounds of the debates, the acrylic painting competition, and the essay writing competition.
Idea Debate
The preliminary debates were held in air-conditioned classrooms using a revised form of “Parliamentary” form of debate that included 3 judges and an umpire/timekeeper and carried on until early evening.
Idea Acrylic Painting Competition
The acrylic painting contest took up most of the day, while the essay writing contest lasted the whole afternoon.

The morning of the second day was occupied by the editorial cartoon drawing competition. The whole morning and early afternoon saw the quarterfinals and semi-finals for the debate.
Acrylic Paintings at the Rodelsa Hall
At 1:30 p.m. the Rotarians of CDO Premiere conducted an auction of the Acrylic Painting Entries at the hallway entrance to the Rodelsa Hall.
2nd Place Winner IDEA Acrylic Painting Contest
One particular entry that was actually the 2nd place winner from Liceo de Cagayan University recorded the highest bidding price. Bidding price started out at P500. At 4:00 p.m., the Debate Grand Finals and eventual Awarding Ceremonies was held inside the Rodelsa Hall.

The debate finals will be televised through delayed telecast with a selected station, the essays and editorial cartoons will be published in local and national newspapers, and the paintings will be displayed at the Centrio Ayala Mall.
Congratulations are in order for the winners of the competition as well as the entire Rotary Club of Cagayan de Oro Premiere for a very successful competition and informative event.
Conclusion
Academic and artistic competitions may come and go, but the I.D.E.A. 2015 has proven that these competitions can actually come together under one momentous occasion. Aside from this, it has given both participants and the general public points of view over an issue that most seem to ignore and thus, puts it on the forefront of awareness because it is an issue that will affect the future of Cagayan de Oro and Mindanao as a whole.
