Kagay-anons Show How Plastic Can Bring People Together

Plastic, for its many great uses, also contributes to the worlds unrecycled  waste. In fact, more than 90% of the plastic used around the world goes unrecycled. But, even with its negative effects, a group of Kagay-anons were still able to show how plastic can bring people together in Cagayan de Oro City.

Fresh from the first EcoBrick Workshop by Ecobricks Philippines, Cookie, Aying and Yuri of Viajero Outdoor Centre  took the initiative and did the first step of sharing their knowledge by conducting a mini starters workshop about the proper ways of making Eco Bricks.

The event not only aimed at informing fellow Kagay-anons of the Hows, Whats, and Whys of Ecobircking, but also gave emphasis on showing how plastic can bring people together in Cagayan de Oro City. And that they did in an overwhelming manner we can say.

Despite the very short notice, the event was overwhelmed with participants from different sectors and demographic, thus showing the growing interest of a lot of Kagay-anons towards recycling and re-purposing plastic rather than have it as a mere waste in our city.

The event was graced by students from different schools, friends from the rafting community of Viajero Outdoor Centre, representatives from several independent groups such as Lakwatsyero (mountaineering community), people from construction and development companies (MDC), and even from the government sector or Department of Education to be specific.

It was indeed a fun and informative event filled with inspiring interactions showing not only the growing concern of our fellow Kagay-anons towards the problem of plastic wastes, but that of their inspiration towards bridging that concern with the proper education and instilling the value of contributing towards a cleaner lifestyle.

Following the discussions were the actual Ecobricking activity where the participants were able to try the actual process and experience first hand how Ecobricks are supposed to be made and how it requires that much needed patience along with the perseverance to make something out of what is considered as waste.

Without a doubt, this little productive activity was able to show how plastic can bring people together, and more importantly, it showed that it doesn’t stop at learning at all. With the right knowledge, presence of collaboration, and the drive to bring a message out thru sharing, ANYONE can influence a ripple effect and make more and more people involved in the campaign towards helping mother earth one idea at a time.

Its truly inspiring to see how a small act of sharing which was initially intended for just a circle of friends was able to show how plastic can bring people together.

Kudos to Viajero Outdoor Centre for hosting the event. And with this overwhelming success, there will be more for training and starters workshop activities for sure.

Don’t be just an Eco Worrier… Be an Eco Warrior!
