Rep. Rodriguez Urges Congress To Recognize Kagay-Anons Who Fought vs US As “National Heroes”

Mga higala! Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez has filed a bill urging Congress to recognize 4 Kagay-anon leaders who fought against US troops during 1900-1901, as National Heroes!

This was disclosed on Rodriguez’s Facebook page today, August 30, 2021, in time with the National Heroes Day celebration of the Philippines.

These brave Kagay-anons offered their lives to stop American colonial rule:

1. General Nicolas Capistrano– the leader of the revolutionaries who waged a one-year war against the Americans in 1900-1901 and led the attack of the Kagay-an revolutionaries, assisted by Bukidnon lumads, against the Americans in the Battle of Cagayan of April 7, 1900.

2. Colonel Apolinar Velez– commanded the revolutionaries in the west of Cagayan de Oro and victoriously led the defenders in the Battle of Macahambus Cave of June 4, 1900, where nine American soldiers were killed and more than ten wounded, and only one Kagay-anon revolutionary died.

3. Captain Vicente Roa– led revolutionaries in the eastern sector in an encounter with the 40th US Regiment where he was killed fighting, together with 34 Kagay-anon soldiers in the Battle of Agusan (May 14, 1900).

4. Captain Apolinario Pabayo– leader of the Machetero troops who, in the Battle of Cagayan succeeded in entering the barracks of the Americans, wounding some Americans, before he died fighting.

The said bill, House Bill 0435, also aims to recognize other Mindanaoans who led the revolution against Spain and the US. For more details:
