Steag Coal Power Plant Announced Being Back To Normal Operations

Spokesperson Jerome Soldevilla of Steag State Power Inc. sent a statement through email saying that the coal-fired power plant is currently back operating normally after one of its generating units shut down for a preventive maintenance last Saturday and Sunday.

The power plant in Villanueva, Misamis Oriental has since started operating in 2006 which has delivered more than 12 billion kw of power to the Mindanao grid sustaining a high availability rating of 90 percent, having a 2.5 percent rate of unplanned outage. A total of 210 mw is what its two generating units are capable of producing feeding the island’s grid.

SPI president and the CEO Dr. Bodo Goerlich explained the shutdown as the company’s strategy to ensure the power plant’s optimal availability during the coming summer season. Currently, the Mindanao grid has 62 mw of reserve power as said by the NGCP (as of 1:00 PM on Monday).
