08 Apr Take Out the Boredom of Summer by Starting Out These New Hobbies
This is, of course, assuming you haven’t tried out these things yet. And these things aren’t limited to students on summer vacation. Anyone get start a hobby or try something new during summer.
What makes summer great is that the weather is mostly fair so you’re not expecting rainy days that can strand you at home. Of course, if you do need to go outdoors, make sure there’s no heatwave or else you’ll be suffering a heatstroke and giving someone else the chance to practice their newly learned summer red cross skills.
Learn a new language
Again, why not? If you have time to spare and with the technology today you don’t have to buy books just to learn a new language. It might even come in handy later if you go travelling. Try learning a language that you know you may really use and speak in the future, and much better if you can use it to further your career. Learning a new language also keeps your brain productive and sharp. There are countless language apps and podcasts on the internet that are free, not to mention, free reading and learning materials as well.
Do some DIY home organizing
No matter where you live your living space can always use some shaking up. Imagine coming home to a clean, shiny, and uncluttered house, apartment, or dorm room. Tidy up and organize your closets, bedroom, and kitchen. Throw away or give away things that you don’t need anymore.
Learn to play an instrument
Music is beautiful, more so if you get to learn to play an instrument rather than just listening to it on your gadgets. You might have to spend for this one since you may need to enroll in a formal class or studio, especially if you plan to learn wind instruments, or the piano. A guitar is handy and can be self-taught for most people. If you have a close friend who can play the guitar, maybe you can get free lessons.
Photography
Photos capture moments in time forever, more so with today’s technology that makes photography not only inexpensive but fun as well. Gone are the days when you needed expensive rolls of film and developing just to see your photos. Today, even those expensive cameras and laptops are worth it because you don’t need to worry about film and development costs. Summer is also the best time to capture great outdoor pictures because of the fair weather, especially during dusk and dawn.
Per ardua ad astra (Through toil to the stars)
To put it more simply and less dramatically, try stargazing this summer. You can start simply by laying a blanket or “banig” outside and gaze at all the beautiful stars at night. Try to name some stars and constellations if you can. Bring your friends in on this and do some research. If you have a friend who has a stargazing telescope, all the better. If not, you and your friends can research on how to make a homemade stargazing telescope using cheap materials and other stuff lying around the house, unused.
Gardening
If you’ve always been curious why your parents or grandparents love gardening, why not join them one day and learn the art. Eventually you’ll learn that gardening can make a difference when the day comes that you’ll need to go tree planting for environmental protection. You can also try planting flowers, fruits, or vegetables if you have enough space in your garden. You get to experience the fruits of your labor when harvesting time comes or when the fruits start bearing.
Learn a new sport
Whether it’s learning a new sport or trying out any sport because you’ve never played any, a great way to stay active in summer is to play sports, especially a new one. Join a local sports team, or have a friend teach you and then form your own teams to play just for fun. Usually, the best outdoor sports for summer are; surfing, ball games, swimming, badminton, beach volleyball and others.
Read a book
A live and physical book that you turn the pages, not those e-books or other online materials. So put away that smartphone and tablet and find out what genres or authors you’ve always wanted to explore and read. And please, put away those textbooks because they don’t count. Find out what you really like reading or if you want to have fun while reading. Some people find it fun to read the books that films or TV shows are made and based on. For instance, American Sniper by Chris Kyle, Generation Kill by Evan Wright, or the Ender’s Game Saga by Orson Scott Card.
Run
Well, why not, it’s summer anyway, so instead of that boring gym with the vague treadmills and weights, explore the outdoors by doing some running. You’ll be amazed at what you see that you won’t normally discover in a closed gym. It’s also very healthy, and it’s free. Start out with short distances of up to 15 minutes for the first week, then for each day after, gradually lengthen the running time and thus, run longer distances. Vary the ground you run on; for instance, alternate running on roads, gravel, sand, soil, etc. It’s more fun for your feet and more fitness for your body.
Writing
No, not a blog and not on your keyboard; real handwriting that involves pen and paper. With today’s technology, writing seems to be a lost art. In fact, computers today have rendered the skill of flowing handwriting almost obsolete. Start a journal for summer and write in it each day. Or you can try your hand at writing short stories. This is usually the base from which writers eventually get to write novels. Or you can try your hand at writing factual articles.
Cooking
You don’t even need to enroll in culinary classes; just grab a cookbook and learn how to cook certain dishes that you’ve never tried before. Try a new dish every week and invite your family and friends in the cooking sessions or to taste your latest concoction. It’s actually a great skill to learn about and have for the future.
