In anticipation of the rainy season, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Northern Mindanao is having a de-clogging of canals and sewers throughout the region.

DPWH-Northern Mindanao Information Officer Vina Maghinay said, “Pirmi gyud na nato ginahimo pero mas intensified lang gyud karon kay ting-ulan naman.”

She said that the clogged drainages are one of the reasons why floods are frequent in the region, specifically in Cagayan de Oro City during the rainy season.

She stated that about 50 percent of the areas that they are to cover in this campaign have already been freed from debris.

The areas in Cagayan de Oro that has already been de-clogged are:

  • Canals going to a mall in Upper Carmen
  • CDO port road
  • Bitan-ag Creek near MUST
  • Sapang Creek
  • Mangalay bypass drainage
  • Alae-Sayre highway
  • Line canals fronting the Department of the Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) office

“We are hopeful na through this mag-minimize jud ang baha but we cannot assure nga guyd nga clear from any obstruction ang uban waterways since sige man ulan,” she said.

She also added, “Kung nalimpyohan siya karon, sa sunod bulan posible ma butangan na sad mga obstruction, busa pirmi ta himo sa declogging.”

Other areas are yet to be visited by the maintenance personnel considering the wide area of coverage for this campaign.
