Apple Tree

Mga higala! Benzone Kennedy Sepe, an agriculture student from Kapatagan, Digos City, has successfully grown the first fruit-bearing apple tree in Mindanao!

ICYDK, it’s very difficult to plant apples in the Philippines and in other tropical countries due to the warm climate, and doing so requires extensive experimentation and expense.

But nonetheless, Sepe succeeded!

He first tried planting apple trees back in 2014 and did a lot of research on the subject. Even with multiple failures and years of waiting, Sepe persevered and worked on this goal.

And finally, in January 2018, he noticed flowers form on one of his apple trees, signifying its flowering stage. The following month, he found four pinkish fruits hanging from the tree’s branches.

“I cannot see any difference between them and commercial apples because the juiciness and crunchiness are the same.”

Sepe currently has several fruit-bearing “Fuji” apple trees, and taking care of them is one of his pastimes, during the current community quarantine caused by COVID-19.

Moreover, his apple farm is now a tourist attraction in Digos and their local agriculture office is helping him improve his work.
