This year’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony theme was “Empowering Women.” Since the ceremony was an invitation-only event, the management requested everyone to at least come and wear something pink in line with the theme.
The program started with a mass near the beach side. This was followed by opening remarks and greetings from the Apple Tree General Manager, Ms. Bjanesha M. Emphasis.
Some of the Apple Tree staff gave a wonderful dance number to the delight of the audience.
A song number from one of the foundation beneficiaries then took place to entertain the guests.
Some cocktails and an early dinner in buffet style followed afterward. The buffet featured some of the dishes and bestsellers that the resort hotel usually serves its guests.
After the buffet dinner, kids from the Children’s Joy Foundation sang and performed a medley of Christmas songs. They are one of the foundation’s beneficiaries of which contributions coming from the resort and hotel.
When the Christmas Tree was finally unveiled and lighted, the tree featured an amalgamation of 4 different Christmas trees that made it look like a Christmas forest. It was decorated with ball and gown skirts with an upper body mannequin bust on top of each, decorated as if wearing Christmas ornaments.
Apple Tree’s Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony has been an annual tradition in the resort hotel since it started three years ago. Some of Cagayan de Oro’s media personalities and bloggers were present at the event: Ercel Maandig, Mark Francisco of Mindanao Business Week, Jay Valmonte of CDO Bloggers, top travel blogger Victor Naïve, Claire Dumo of Urban Life Mindanao Gold Star Daily, and KC and Alvin Curay of About Cagayan de Oro.
Many VIP guests were also in attendance such as Ms. Nelia Lee, President of COHARA (Cagayan de Oro Hotel and Restaurant Association).
The event’s theme of “Empowering Women” is in line with the 2016 celebration of International Women’s Day held last March by the United Nations. It is also in line with the 2017 United Nation’s celebration of International Women’s Day also to be held in March. This year’s empowering women theme from the U.N. was “Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality.” The theme for 2017 will be “Women in the Changing World of Work.”
The wearing of pink during celebrations of women’s empowerment has been a long tradition in the UN since it began celebrating International Women’s Day in 2010 after the creation of the UN Women through the United Nation’s General Assembly.
