In a report from Sun.Star, 5 individuals were arrested by the officials of the City Local Environment and Natural Resources Office (Clenro) at San Simon Village, Cagayan de Oro last January 24, 2017, Tuesday, because of their involvement in illegal mining.

The 5 were not named, however, Edwin Dael, Clenro officer-in-charge, said that they found out that the Cagayan river looked muddy downtown while clear in upland villages. Because of what they have discovered, they conducted a search operation and confirmed that mining is being operated in the area.

Among the confiscated items were two hydraulic pumps with accessories, a carpet, and margaha, of which such tools are being utilized to filter gold.

Illegal mining has been one of the major culprits that damage the environment which then triggers flash floods in the city. And according to Dael, Iponan and Cagayan rivers may be endangered again as around 10 to 15 percent of mining operations have recommenced.

Currently, the illegal miners are detained at the Maharlika police headquarters detention cell.
