25 Jan Ayala Foundation to Establish 1st Drug Rehabilitation Facility in ARMM
Last January 24, 2017, a memorandum of agreement between the Ayala Foundation, Inc., Marawi City, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) was made for the establishment of the drug rehabilitation facility. This initiative by the Ayala Group serves as a means of support for the government’s efforts in combating substance abuse in the Philippines.
To be called Siyapen Drug Rehabilitation Center, with “siyapen” meaning care in Maranao, it will feature 70 beds for in-patient treatment and also to accommodate drug dependents who undergo outpatient care.
According to the Ayala Foundation, as of November of last year 2016, at least 123 people have been arrested while at least 471 have surrendered to the local police in Marawi City alone, due to their involvement in illegal drugs.
As noted by Marawi City Mayor Usman Gandamra during the signing ceremony held in Makati City, they had a pending request to the Office of the President for assistance to combat drug addiction when an offer to build the rehabilitation facility came from Ayala Foundation.
To be turned into the said rehabilitation center is a building owned by the city government of Marawi until April, headed by the construction arm of Ayala Land, Inc., Makati Development Corp. Following its completion, the Siyapen Drug Rehabilitation Center will then be turned over to the city government of Marawi for its operation.
