On Saturday morning, July 23, a big time drug supplier in Mindanao has been arrested in Grand Ballon, Barangay Kauswagan, Cagayan de Oro City. This is one of the biggest catch so far since President Rodrigo Duterte started his offensive against illegal drugs more than a month ago.

Police arrested Johaira Abinal, the former mayor of Maguing town in Lanao del Sur, and her spouse believed to be the illegal drug supplier in five regions in Mindanao, which includes; Davao, Northern Mindanao, Caraga, Soccsksargen, and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

Together with Abinal, Sonny Santican and six others are also arrested in the operation.

The raid is conducted by the combined operatives from the Cagayan de Oro City Police Office (COCPO) and the Philippine Drug enforcement Agency-Northern Mindanao region (PDEA 10) armed with the search warrant issued by a local judge.

PDEA Northern Mindanao regional director Adrian Alvaro said, “They (Abinal drug group) are dealing drugs in bulk. If the orders are huge, [the payment is done] through bank to bank transactions, and on consignment basis.”

It was known that they get their supplies from a Chinese national in Manila. They distribute the narcotics through smaller distributors under their watch.

The Abinal drug group is believed to have existed for more than 15 years, yet this is just the first recorded arrest made unto them.

Abinal defended her husband Major Suharto Macabuat, saying, “My husband is not involved in any crime. He came from a good family.”

Macabuat is assigned in the Headquarter Support Group in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City.

This is just but the start of Duterte’s campaign against drugs and criminality. He just delivered his State of the Nation Address (SONA) to the people, yet his achievement in this category of leadership has surpassed the former administration.
