07 Sep BJMP 10 Declared Double Alert Status in Lumbia City Jail
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Region 10 declared “double alert” status in Lumbia City Jail as the congestion is getting worse.
The city jail is so jam-packed that inmates could get sick, Jail Supt. Nestor Caber, BJMP spokesman said.
The current population in the jail has increased to 584 percent, Caber added. As he spoke, “Ang atong capacity sa Lumbia City Jail kay 250 ra unta ka mga inmates apan karon aduna na kita’y 1,801 inmates.”
Among the 1,801 inmates, 1,237 of them are imprisoned on drug-related charges, Caber added.
He added that the number of inmates increased by 68 percent since President Rodrigo sat down as president.
The inmates are having a “double shift” sleeping arrangements due to the congested city jail, Caber stated. As he spoke, “Dili man mahimo nga magdungan sila pagka-tulog so puli-puli sila kay bisan ako nang gipaga-mit ang chapel para ilang katulgan congested pa gihapon.”
Stricter security measures are also implemented by the BJMP to prevent full-scale riot inside the jail.
Caber also stated that due to the increasing number of inmates in the city jail, the budget for food of the inmates is also an issue.
