The Department of Science and Technology-Information and Communications Technology Office (DOST-ICTO), Information Technology and Business Process Association of the Philippines (IBPAP), and Leechiu Property Consultants (LPC) just declared the list of “Next Wave” cities in the Philippines based on the latest Next Wave Cities (NWC) report. These are the top locations for local and international IT-BPM players, and among them was the city of Cagayan de Oro. Below is the list(in no particular order):
- Dumaguete City
- Cagayan De Oro City
- Baguio City
- Dasmarinas City
- Dagupan City
- Sta. Rosa City, Laguna
- Lipa City
- Malolos City
- Taytay, Rizal
- Naga City
This category is being determined based on a city’s talent, infrastructure (includes quality of roads, availability of hotels, presence of international and domestic airports, etc), cost, and business environment and risk management (BERM), including vulnerability to natural disturbances and issues related to security and safety.

The ICT Business Council of Cagayan de Oro is working to bridge the gap between what the academic institutions are offering to students and the industry’s expectations. According to the business council’s executive director, Jonathan Arvin D. Adolfo, “The academe must still seek approval if changes in their curriculum are made,” for academic institutions are often prevented from progressing quickly by government regulation of curriculum changes.
“Graduates who would seek jobs in the local ICT industry must first need enhancement training from their new employers to cope with the new innovations,” he added during an industry-academe forum held last March at Cagayan de Oro College-PHINMA Education Network.
A new list of “Emerging Cities” has also been revealed. These cities are being recognized for their potential of becoming the next wave cities. The cities are as follows:
- Iriga City
- Balanga City
- Batangas City
- Laoag City
- Legazpi City
- Roxas City
- Zamboanga City
- Tarlac City
- Tuguegarao City
- Puerto Princesa City
