14 Aug CdeO Council considers allowing tri-cabs to operate as PUVs
In an article from Sunstar.com, the Cagayan de Oro City Council’s Committee on Public Utilities is now considering to give colorum or nonfranchised tri-cab vehicles the permission to pick up passengers as public utility vehicles (PUVs).
Chairperson of the City Council’s Committee on Public Utilities, City Councilor Teodulfo Lao Jr., said that he will consider the request of tricab operators to be able to operate without the fear of being caught by traffic enforcers in the local transport routing plan of the committee.
Considered to be colorum vehicles, tri-cabs are used by the public for cheaper transportation and are rising competitors for motorelas and jeepneys.
However, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB)-Northern Mindanao director Aminoden Guro said that tri-cabs must apply for authorization to operate from the local government unit or from barangays.
“The LGU or the barangay that should give them [tri-cabs] authorization to operate under the Joint Memorandum Circular #001 series of 2017 by the Department of Transportation and Department of Interior Local Government, given that the documents of Tricab are met and the driver has a license,” Guro said.
Even with the operate, Guro emphasized that tri-cabs are still prohibited from traversing along national highways.
