In an article from Sunstar, Mayor Oscar Morena released a statement from Thailand that he fully supports the decision of President Rodrigo Duterte to declare martial law covering the whole island of Mindanao.

Moreno thinks that the decision of the president is a decisive and focused move that intents to bring lasting peace and harmony in Mindanao.

Moreno also hopes that the proclamation of martial law would not suppress the collective will of the people in Mindanao and neither will it disregard their constitutional guarantees except of course when reasonably necessary in achieving the peace that Mindanao needs.

Moreno is currently in Thailand since the day before the crisis in Marawi City has erupted. He was called to attend the Asia Urban Resilience Finance Forum, a forum discussing on climate change and the challenges on the lack of infrastructure in Asia. The forum will run until Friday, May 26.

Although the mayor is away, spokesperson Rivera assures that Moreno is closely monitoring the CDeO’s situation. In fact, all the planning and assessments are reported to him.

Currently, Vice Mayor Raineir Joaquin Uy is acting as the city mayor and is as well the head on planning security measures for the martial law declaration.
