24 Jul CdeO Officials to strictly implement smoking ban
In an article from Sunstar.com, Cagayan de Oro City officials led by no other than Mayor Oscar Moreno is fully committed to implement the Nationwide Smoking ban signed by the President himself, President Rodrigo Duterte, last May 16 and took its full effect yesterday July 23.
Executive Order (EO) No. 26, bans all smoking acts in public areas or places of collective use.
The EO stated that “public places means all places, fixed or mobile, that are accessible or open to the public or places for collective use, regardless of ownership or right to access, including but not limited to schools, workplaces, government facilities, establishments that provide food and drinks, accommodation, merchandise, professional services, entertainment or other services. It also includes outdoor spaces where facilities are available for public or where a crowd of people would gather, such as, but not limited to, playgrounds, sports grounds or centers, church grounds, health/hospital compounds, transportation terminals, markets, resorts, walkways/sidewalks, entrance ways, waiting areas and the like.”
Moreno said that he fully supports the EO and wants the public to be aware of its hazardous effects. Moreno added that many Kagay-anons nowadays are starting to realize that smoking is bad for their health.
According to the Department of Health (DOH), the government should take the lead in implementing and monitoring compliance of the EO.
The local government is required to form a task force that will check if public establishments and public vehicles have designated smoking areas. Violators will be fined from P500-P10,000 depending on their number of offenses. While establishment violating the EO will be fined with P5,000 or imprisonment of not more than 30 days.
