Following the closure of the dumpsite at Upper Dagong, Carmen, the government of Cagayan de Oro City gathered the waste pickers or also called as “mangaykayays,” to provide them food assistance, healthcare, and other basic services.

In a Facebook post by the Cagayan de Oro City Philippines page, they were all gathered at Mt. Carmel Church in Brgy. Carmen on April 18, 2017. This was conducted by the government of CDeO to help them and give them assistance as they were affected by this dumpsite closure given that it was their source of income.

Alternative and sustainable livelihood opportunities and job placements, skills training programs, healthcare and immediate relief assistance such as food and cash benefits were offered to them.

More than 300 affected residents were given free food assistance, healthcare, and other basic services to cope with their daily needs.
