24 Feb CDO Barangay Officials Criticize DILG’s Plan of Marking Drug-Free Homes with Stickers
As part of the new anti-illegal drug strategy of the government, the Department of Interior and Local Government is planning to mark drug-free homes with stickers. However, this is being criticized by some of the barangay officials in the City as according to them, posting stickers to label drug-free homes invades the individual’s right of privacy and violates their constitutional rights.
In a report from Sun.Star, Barangay Captain Jaime Frias II of Barangay 23 said that the department’s plan is worse than the Philippine National Police’s (PNP) “Tokhang”, adding that it is discriminating in nature.
Meanwhile, Barangay Chairman Marvin Beja of Barangay Puntod urged the department to review the proposal carefully and formulate concrete criteria so as to make sure it will successfully lead towards its desired and intended result. He added that the plan does not assure that the people living in a specific home are either involved in the illegal drug activities and that it will only spawn biased impression and discrimination from the public.
As stated in the proposal, those houses that have no stickers will be at risk for mediation by the authorities.
