20 Jan City Gov’t to Boost Old, Congested Drainage System in CDO
Following the massive flash floods that affected 6,827 individuals in Cagayan de Oro City last January 16, Monday evening, the city government proposed to boost the drainage system.
According to a report from ABS-CBN News, the city’s drainage system is too old that it was seen improved last 1960s, said CDO City Mayor Oscar Moreno.
Due to the clogged and shabby drainage system, the flood in the city rapidly rose up in just three (3) hours which caught everyone off guard.
Moreno stated that the city’s problem is that, given its size now, there must be a massive overhaul of the drainage system but it will take some time and it is very costly. He added that building a new city is easier.
Meanwhile, the weather bureau, Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) also said that the old drainage system of the city is partly to be blamed for the massive floods.
Informal settlers living close to the streams are to be relocated as planned by the city mayor. He said that informal settlers used to throw their garbage into the creeks which clogged the waterways and aggravate the flooding.
