Mga higala! Colleges and universities are not covered by RA 11480, the law that allowed the Department of Education (DepEd) to defer the opening of classes from August 24 to October 5, 2020!

This postponement was approved by President Rodrigo Duterte to give public schools more time to prepare for blended learning.

According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Chairman J. Prospero De Vera, the higher education sector is under CHED and not DepEd, thus adapting different structures.

“School year structure is determined by individual universities in the exercise of academic freedom, which is a constitutional guarantee for higher education.”

However, De Vera then clarified that because of this privilege, colleges and universities can also have the choice to open classes on any month they want, as approved by their board.
