03 Oct Crime Rate in Northern Mindanao Observed a 45 Percent Drop
In a data reported from the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) regional economic situationer, crimes which were recorded in the second quarter of this year, 2016, dropped to 45 percent compared to the same period last year. It showed that from April to June of last year, crimes totaled to 9,361 while this year, crimes recorded totaled to 5,321.
The said report furtherly disclosed that index crimes which comprised 39 percent of the total crime volume dropped by 59 percent. In the second quarter of 2015, there were 4,993 cases reported. That dropped to 2,050 in the same period of this year, 2016. To mention, crimes that are being considered in the index crimes are murder, homicide, theft. carnapping, physical injury and robbery.
Meanwhile, non-index crimes which comprise the 61 percent of the total crime volume also dropped to only 29 percent. These non-index crimes are those that involve non-aggravated assault, fraud, stolen property, forgery and counterfeiting, prostitution, weapons, vandalism, gambling, embezzlement and others.
Even crimes against property dropped to 54 percent, with crimes against persons dropped by 67 percent.
Positively, efficiencies in crime solution and crime clearance individually increased by 11.78 and 11.67 percentage points.
Officials of NEDA also reported that Northern Mindanao’s average monthly crime rate dropped by 31 percent. In figures, from 58, it dropped to 37 per 100,000 population.
Misamis Oriental, alone, had the highest crime solution efficiency of 43 percent. With Camiguin having the lowest recorded average monthly crime rate of 17 per population of 100,000.
As of August of this year, 2016, the police has strengthened to 7,370 with 1:653 police-population ratio. It is 153 more persons for one police officer compared to 1:500 ideal ratio.
The data is a result of the doubled efforts of the police in reducing crimes nationwide.
