De Lima to receive award for standing up vs Duterte; Netizens disagree

Included in the list of 100 global thinkers of 2016 was no other than Senator Leila De Lima for standing up against President Rodrigo Duterte in his bloody war on drugs.

The award to the Senator, which is given by the prestigious Foreign Policy magazine, is among the 13 global thinkers in “Challengers” category. According to Foreign Policy, the senator was cited as a former chairperson of the Senate Committee on Justice and Human Rights, and for leading the probe of extra-judicial killings.

“Since taking office in June, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has waged a brutal war on drugs. Thousands of alleged traffickers, dealers, and users have been executed by state forces or pro-government vigilantes,” the citation said.

However, many netizens have disagreed on the award and lambasted the citation for the senator. According to Sass Rogando Sasot, a political analyst and blogger said that Foreign Policy should understand the country’s situation and that the Senator has been accused of cuddling illegal drug syndicates.

Many netizens have also cited De limas involvement in extramarital affairs with her former bodyguard and lover, and some even cited her service as head of the Department of Justice during Aquino’s term.

Another Filipino honored by Foreign Policy as among the “Challengers” is Rep. Geraldine Roman. Other personalities cited for the same category are French Penitentiary Administration Project Director Geraldine Blin, Women Without Borders Founder Edit Schlaffer and Zimbabwe Pastor Evan Mawarire, among others.
