DENR Aims To Protect Endangered Population of “Ibid” Due to Excessive Hunting

Mga higala! Due to the excessive hunting of Philippine sailfin lizards (Hydrosaurus pustulatus) which is locally known as “ibid”, an office of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) together with the provincial government of Misamis Oriental is aiming to protect a part of the Solana River in Jasaan.

The said species of “ibid” considers the lower Solana River as its home, but according to conservation experts, their population is now decreasing rapidly due to rampant hunting, which is mostly for export because their meat can cost up to $650 (P34,028.54) per kilogram in the United States.

To protect the said lizard, the Protected Area Management and Biodiversity Conservation Section (PAMBCS) of DENR recommends declaring part of Jasaan’s river, where the lizards live, as a critical habitat.
