Increasing of HIV/AIDS Cases in Phil Alarming, DOH to Distribute Condoms in Schools

Following the skyrocketing number of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) positive youth in the Philippines, the Department of Health (DOH) proposed to give out condoms in schools.

According to a report from Inquirer, this program is part of the department’s “business unusual strategy.” The department also encourages parents to teach safe sex at home as part of the strategy.

In a press conference for the World AIDS Day 2016 held on Thursday, Health Secretary Paulyn Ubial said that as soon as they could thresh out the said strategy with the Department of Education (DepEd), they could then distribute condoms after providing a proper counseling.

She added that they would also prepare the school authorities, teachers, principals, and healthcare providers.

Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP)’s Episcopal Commission on Health Care (ECHC) executive secretary, Fr. Dan Cancino said that the cases increased particularly for those young people age ranges from 15 to 24 years old. He added that they are the future, the high school and college students.

According to the data provided by DOH, HIV cases recorded from 1984 to October 2016 now has a total of 38,114, with 32,099 recorded from 2011 to 2016. There were 10,279 HIV cases recorded among 15 to 24 years old during the period, of which 9,066 were listed since 2011.
